It was late afternoon on February 10, 2013, as two men stood in a parking area not far from Millsboro in Washington County just along the bank of the Monongahela River. It was still light outside and the weather was mild and dry at the time. As the men continued their conversation, one of them pointed to the river and said “look at that.” It took a moment for the other man to look toward the water and focus on what his friend was seeing.

In 1934, Albert Yashinsky of Shenandoah shot and killed Susan Mummey (‘Old Suss’) of Ferndale seven years after she supposedly hexed him as he worked in a field adjacent to the Mummey farm. Yashinsky is said to have muttered in prison, “Those eyes! Oh, those eyes, oh how I wanted to have them closed! I could not stand them!” This incident was also connected to an appearance of some weird zooform creature, though in this case it is more obvious.

One thing’s for certain: like the toxic sludge left over from mismanaged World War II facilities in Point Pleasant, the Mothman is still out there. Somewhere. I’ve seen it, others have seen it, so it’s really fantastic to find film crews who take the subject much more seriously than you could ever get from a two minute ‘look at these freaks’ clip on the nightly news. Informative in all the right ways--despite some really creepy guests--you’ll appreciate the detail supplied here by the film’s producers.

On the evening of August 26, 2010, about 8:10 pm, there was a sighting of a monstrous bird in South Greensburg, PA. Just as it was getting dark, four people were sitting around in the yard having a barbecue and enjoying the beautiful weather when suddenly, their attention was drawn skyward by a sound like a “swish” or a “swoosh” or as one witness stated, “like air coming straight down.”

This incident occurred on September 19, 2009, at about 3:45 pm, on a beautiful, clear and sunny afternoon, in rural Westmoreland County, not far from Youngwood. A woman, her husband and child were in their car driving along the country road that afternoon. Suddenly, the woman seated behind her husband yelled out, “watch out for that snake.”

It appeared to be aprox. 3- 3 1/2 feet in height. As it seemed to be running fast across the lawn, it sounded heavy, like an adult human. It didn’t have fur or feathers. I saw two skinny bone like legs, but didn’t look as though it had feet like a human, similar to that of a bird.

Chances are you won’t find in-depth articles on these and other crypto-creatures in your local newspaper or in academic journals. Blogs do a great job of keeping enthusiasts up-to-date on the latest sightings, but what’s been missing from the crypto field is a regular weekly publication that brings readers more analytical, in-depth articles on cryptid-related phenomena -- a newsletter that goes beyond hyperlinks and daily headlines to bring readers information they simply can’t find anywhere else.

I know that many Bigfoot researchers are hot to prove the existence of the creature, and in such cases as Native American mythology their research of it is even more spotty. Many have a “Harry and the Hendersons” approach to Bigfoot. In Chinook Indian mythology they were a vicious race of demons that tormented man and was known to abduct and eat humans...

The Sacred Book of the Werewolf is so rich in symbolism that I hardly know where to begin. On the surface, it seems to be the story of a teenage oriental prostitute named A Hu-Li who falls in love with a werewolf in her travels through modern day Russia. But underneath that relatively thin layer is a tale more about a Russian crisis of identity, and mankind’s crisis of identity as well, as both attempt to transform itself from tailless monkeys into something else--the super-werewolf.

I think most people have a bizarre fascination and would probably enjoy being stranded on an island, myself included--at least for a short while. This book will take you and your children on that adventure, and given the beautiful illustrations, your imagination and your children’s imagination will be completely immersed in that netherworld known as--well, Monster Isle.

The death of zoologist Steve ("The Crocodile Hunter") Irwin in 2006 contributed to the change. It is now approaching 49 years that I have been researching and investigating mysterious encounters in Pennsylvania. While I have an interest in all types of anomalies, I have focused on the UFO phenomena, and sightings of Bigfoot, black panthers, mountain lions, and other mystery animals. Over the years I have had some reports of what were described as huge birds with gigantic wingspans.

Back in the late ’90s, I was asked to pen a book of folklore about Appalachia. I opted instead to create my own tales based on local myths and legends, stories I came to learn during my time as a police reporter for The Register-Herald newspaper in Beckley. That book is pure myth, a tongue-in-cheek tombful of creepy tales and spooky superstitions. Everyone knows it’s pure fantasy. That’s half the fun. But some other legends are much more closely grounded in the soil of West Virginia culture. Maybe you haven’t heard such tales. Perhaps you’re planning a trip to this great state. Well, folks, you have been warned. What follows is the top five supernatural monsters you may encounter in West Virginia. My advice? Educate yourself. Speak kindly to the folks you meet. And stick to the road.

Elizaville is a small town in Boone County, Indiana that has a dark secret. Many people have died there. The town has, at last count, four cemeteries, and a lot of abandoned cars parked on the side of the road. If you walk through the fields, you’re likely to stumble upon some human bones. Local authorities have gone through on a number of occasions, but never found enough evidence to convict any civilians.
